| 1915 | The Western Pacific fails to meet its mortgage bonds and goes into receivership. |
| 1916 | SP sells the San Bernardino & Redlands Railway to Pacific Electric. |
| 1916 | A new Western Pacific is formed after the sale of the old one on the steps of the Oakland court house. |
| 1922 | March 8. Congress grants forfeited railroad right of ways to the owners of the land being crossed. |
| 1924 | The Del Monte Hotel burns down again. It is rebuilt in the Mission style and serves as a resort until the Navy commandeers it for use as a training school. |
| 1925 | The Southern Pacific acquires the Lake Tahoe Railroad from the Bliss family, leasing its track for the sum of one silver dollar per year. |
| 1926 | The Western Pacific completes a link with the Great Northern Railway. |
| 1929 | Santa Fe surrenders its share in the Northwestern Pacific to the Southern Pacific. |
| 1930 | August 15. The Mill Valley and Mount Tamalpais Scenic Railroad ends operations. |
| 1930 | October 14. The opening of the Carquinez Straits railroad bridge ends the need for a train ferry between San Francisco and Sacramento. |
| 1935 | Angelenos rebel against plans by the city to replace Angel's Flight with a municipal elevator. |
| 1938 | January 2. Maiden run of The City of San Francisco. |
| 1939 | November. The SPC is consolidated with the SP. |
| 1942 | Competition from highways forces abandonment of the Lake Tahoe Railroad. |
